Ingredients:
1 large juicy lemon
1 clove garlic
1 thin ¼ inch slice of Onion
1 cup Dr Pepper (caffeine free)
¾ cup ketchup
¼ cup brown sugar
3 T Worcestershire sauce
2 T A1 steak sauce
1 T hot sauce (like Tapatio) (optional for sicy)
1 T cider vinegar
1 T liquid smoke
½ t pepper
Coarse salt
Instructions:
Cut lemon in half and cut a ¼ in slice off of one half. Remove any seeds in this slice. Juice the remaining lemon to obtain 2-3 T of juice.
Place the all ingredients into a nonreactive sauce pan: lemon slice, lemon juice, garlic clove (crushed), onion slice, Dr Pepper, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, A1 steak sauce, optional hot sauce for spicy, vinegar, liquid smoke, pepper and a bit of salt to taste.
Bring the sauce to a boil over medium heat and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes.
Add more salt, hot sauce or brown sugar to taste. Makes sweet without the hot sauce or spicy with the hot sauce.
Let it cool and refrigerate overnight. Remove the solids by straining the sauce. Serve at room temperature.
The sauce will keep for several months in the fridge.
